Meaning & Reflection
As-Samad is almost untranslatable, so the commentators gather its senses: the Master to whom every creature turns in its needs, while He Himself needs no one (Ibn Ashur, Ibn Kathir); and the One so utterly full and self-sufficient that there is no emptiness or lack in Him at all. al-Saadi adds that all of creation, high and low, is desperately poor before Him, begging their needs, because He alone is complete in every attribute. Everything leans; He is what everything leans on. Ask yourself: I keep leaning on things that are themselves leaning — people, status, plans, all as needy as I am. What would change today if I brought my real need straight to the only One who needs nothing back?
