Meccan · Verse 2 of 110
English: warning of severe punishment from Him, and [giving] glad news to the believers who do good deeds––an excellent reward
Meaning & Reflection
'[Made] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and give good news to the believers who do righteous deeds.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the Book's straightness serves two mercies at once — a warning that can still save, and glad tidings for those who act on faith. Ask yourself: I tend to hear 'warning' as harsh and 'good news' as kind, as if they came from different sources. This verse issues both from the same straight Book, both as mercy: the warning to steer me off the cliff, the good news to draw me toward the reward. A message with no crookedness will tell me *both* the danger and the hope, honestly. Do I let the Qur'an do both for me — warn me where I'm heading wrong and encourage me where I'm heading right — or do I only want the half that comforts?
Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Ashur.

- Personal Experience. Ask not just what this means, but what it means TO me and FOR me, right now in my life.
