Surah Al-Kahf 18:48 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَعُرِضُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفًّۭا لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۭ ۚ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُم مَّوْعِدًۭا

English: They will be lined up before your Lord: ‘Now you have come to Us as We first created you, although you claimed We had not made any such appointment for you.’

Bengali: তারা আপনার পালনকর্তার সামনে পেশ হবে সারিবদ্ধ ভাবে এবং বলা হবেঃ তোমরা আমার কাছে এসে গেছ; যেমন তোমাদেরকে প্রথম বার সৃষ্টি করেছিলাম। না, তোমরা তো বলতে যে, আমি তোমাদের জন্যে কোন প্রতিশ্রুত সময় নির্দিষ্ট করব না।

Meaning & Reflection

'And they will be presented before your Lord in rows: Now you have come to Us just as We created you the first time — but you claimed We would never make for you an appointment.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the stripping-away — presented 'saffa', in ranks, and 'as We created you the first time': bare, without possessions, status, or the props that clothed the worldly self. Ask yourself: I arrive at that presentation exactly as I began — with nothing but myself, none of the wealth or titles or images I spent my life assembling. Everything I stood behind is gone; only I remain, in rows before Him. It presses the question of what I am *apart from* my accessories — because that stripped self is what is actually presented. And it recalls the forgotten 'appointment' I so easily deny by my living. Am I building a self worth presenting bare — or only decorating a self that will be undressed at the door?
