Surah Al-Kahf 18:55 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ إِذْ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ قُبُلًۭا

English: Now that guidance has come to them, what stops these people believing and asking forgiveness from their Lord before the fate of earlier peoples annihilates them or their torment confronts them?

Bengali: হেদায়েত আসার পর এ প্রতীক্ষাই শুধু মানুষকে বিশ্বাস স্থাপন করতে এবং তাদের পালনকর্তার কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করতে বিরত রাখে যে, কখন আসবে তাদের কাছে পূর্ববর্তীদের রীতিনীতি অথবা কখন আসবে তাদের কাছেআযাব সামনাসামনি।

Meaning & Reflection

'And nothing prevents people from believing when guidance comes to them, and from asking forgiveness of their Lord, except that the way of the former peoples should befall them, or the punishment come upon them face to face.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the diagnosis — it is not lack of evidence that holds people back, but a perverse demand to *see the punishment first*, to wait for disaster before they will believe. Ask yourself: this names a strange stubbornness in me — refusing to change until the consequence actually lands, wanting to touch the fire before I'll believe it burns. I say I'll reform 'when I have to', treating warning as insufficient and only catastrophe as convincing. But faith that waits for the punishment to arrive is faith that comes too late. Am I withholding belief and repentance until forced by disaster — when the whole mercy of guidance is that I can turn *before* the consequence, on the evidence I already have?
