Surah Al-Kahf 18:58 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ذُو ٱلرَّحْمَةِ ۖ لَوْ يُؤَاخِذُهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ۚ بَل لَّهُم مَّوْعِدٌۭ لَّن يَجِدُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَوْئِلًۭا

English: Your Lord is the Most Forgiving, and full of mercy: if He took them to task for the wrongs they have done, He would hasten their punishment on. They have an appointed time from which they will have no escape,

Bengali: আপনার পালনকর্তা ক্ষমাশীল, দয়ালু, যদি তিনি তাদেরকে তাদের কৃতকর্মের জন্যে পাকড়াও করেন তবে তাদের শাস্তি ত্বরাম্বিত করতেন, কিন্তু তাদের জন্য রয়েছে একটি প্রতিশ্রুত সময়, যা থেকে তারা সরে যাওয়ার জায়গা পাবে না।

Meaning & Reflection

'And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. Were He to seize them for what they have earned, He would hasten the punishment for them. But they have an appointed time, from which they will find no escape.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the tender logic — the *reason* the consequence has not yet fallen is not that it won't, but that God's mercy grants a delay, an appointed window, before the fixed reckoning. Ask yourself: I habitually misread the delay of consequences as evidence that there will be none — 'nothing's happened, so I'm fine'. This verse corrects me: the delay is *mercy*, not exemption — a gift of time to return, not proof of escape. The very space I'm using to keep drifting is the space He gave me to come back. Am I reading God's patience as permission to continue — or as the merciful window it actually is, to change before the appointed time, from which there is no escape, arrives?
