Surah Al-Kahf 18:66 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰ هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًۭا

English: Moses said to him, ‘May I follow you so that you can teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?’

Bengali: মূসা তাঁকে বললেনঃ আমি কি এ শর্তে আপনার অনুসরণ করতে পারি যে, সত্যপথের যে জ্ঞান আপনাকে শেখানো হয়েছে, তা থেকে আমাকে কিছু শিক্ষা দেবেন?

Meaning & Reflection

'Musa said to him: May I follow you, on the condition that you teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the exquisite humility of the request — a mighty prophet asking, gently and as a supplicant, to *follow* and learn 'some of' what the other knows. Ask yourself: notice the courtesy — 'may I follow you', 'teach me *some* of' — no entitlement, no assumption that his rank earns him the knowledge. The adab (manner) of seeking knowledge is itself a lesson: to approach a teacher as a humble follower, grateful for even a portion. My own pride often ruins my learning — I come to teachers, to advice, to correction, defensive and self-important, wanting to be recognised rather than taught. Do I seek knowledge and guidance with Musa's humility — 'may I follow, that you might teach me' — or with an ego that keeps the door half-closed?
