Surah Al-Baqara 2:178 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْقِصَاصُ فِى ٱلْقَتْلَى ۖ ٱلْحُرُّ بِٱلْحُرِّ وَٱلْعَبْدُ بِٱلْعَبْدِ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ بِٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۚ فَمَنْ عُفِىَ لَهُۥ مِنْ أَخِيهِ شَىْءٌۭ فَٱتِّبَاعٌۢ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَأَدَآءٌ إِلَيْهِ بِإِحْسَٰنٍۢ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ تَخْفِيفٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَرَحْمَةٌۭ ۗ فَمَنِ ٱعْتَدَىٰ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَلَهُۥ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ

English: You who believe, fair retribution is prescribed for you in cases of murder: the free man for the free man, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if the culprit is pardoned by his aggrieved brother, this shall be adhered to fairly, and the culprit shall pay what is due in a good way. This is an alleviation from your Lord and an act of mercy. If anyone then exceeds these limits, grievous suffering awaits him.

Bengali: হে ঈমানদারগন! তোমাদের প্রতি নিহতদের ব্যাপারে কেসাস গ্রহণ করা বিধিবদ্ধ করা হয়েছে। স্বাধীন ব্যক্তি স্বাধীন ব্যক্তির বদলায়, দাস দাসের বদলায় এবং নারী নারীর বদলায়। অতঃপর তার ভাইয়ের তরফ থেকে যদি কাউকে কিছুটা মাফ করে দেয়া হয়, তবে প্রচলিত নিয়মের অনুসরণ করবে এবং ভালভাবে তাকে তা প্রদান করতে হবে। এটা তোমাদের পালনকর্তার তরফ থেকে সহজ এবং বিশেষ অনুগ্রহ। এরপরও যে ব্যাক্তি বাড়াবাড়ি করে, তার জন্য রয়েছে বেদনাদায়ক আযাব।
