Surah Al-Baqara 2:8 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection
سُورَةُ البَقَرَةِ · Medinan · Verse 8 of 286
وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
English: Some people say, ‘We believe in God and the Last Day,’ when really they do not believe.
Bengali: আর মানুষের মধ্যে কিছু লোক এমন রয়েছে যারা বলে, আমরা আল্লাহ ও পরকালের প্রতি ঈমান এনেছি অথচ আদৌ তারা ঈমানদার নয়।
Meaning & Reflection
'And among the people are those who say: We believe in God and the Last Day, but they are not believers.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the third and most extensively described category — the hypocrites (munafiqun), who profess faith with the tongue while it is absent from the heart: the gap between the said and the real. Ask yourself: the Qur'an gives this group *more* verses than either the sincere or the openly disbelieving — because their danger is subtlest, and their condition the easiest to slip into unnoticed. Hypocrisy is not always the dramatic double life; it is any distance between what I *say* I believe and what my heart and actions actually hold. Where do my professions outrun my reality — where does my tongue claim a faith, a love, a commitment that my inner life and my choices quietly contradict?
Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Saadi, Ibn Kathir.
Reflect with the Five Lenses
Maani's framework for Tadabbur (heart-centred reflection) on Surah Al-Baqara 2:8:
- Wording. Look closely at the specific words and structure. Which word stands out, and why might Allah have chosen it here?
- Quranic Worlds. Place the verse in its context — what is happening around it, and what world does it open up?
- Personal Experience. Ask not just what this means, but what it means TO me and FOR me, right now in my life.
- Connections. How does this verse connect to other verses, to the Sunnah, or to themes across the Quran?
- General Lessons. What timeless lesson or action point can I carry away and live by?
