Surah Yaseen 36:33 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَءَايَةٌۭ لَّهُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ ٱلْمَيْتَةُ أَحْيَيْنَٰهَا وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبًّۭا فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُونَ

English: There is a sign for them in the lifeless earth: We give it life and We produce grain from it for them to eat;

Bengali: তাদের জন্যে একটি নিদর্শন মৃত পৃথিবী। আমি একে সঞ্জীবিত করি এবং তা থেকে উৎপন্ন করি শস্য, তারা তা থেকে ভক্ষণ করে।

Meaning & Reflection

'A sign for them is the dead earth: We give it life and bring forth grain from it, so from it they eat.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i mark the pivot from stories to signs (ayat): the answer to 'how could the dead ever live again?' is happening under their feet every single season — the land dies, then is raised, on schedule. Ask yourself: the yearly resurrection of the earth is so reliable that I've stopped seeing it as a miracle at all — it's just 'spring'. But this verse offers it as the plainest proof of the resurrection I doubt: the One who revives the dead land yearly is not going to find reviving me difficult. What everyday miracle have I filed under 'ordinary' precisely because it never fails?
