سَلَٰمٌۭ قَوْلًۭا مِّن رَّبٍّۢ رَّحِيمٍۢ
English: “Peace,” a word from the Lord of Mercy.

Meaning & Reflection
'Peace — a word from a Merciful Lord.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i note the crown of every delight is not a thing but a *word*: after the shade, the fruit, the fulfilled desire, the greatest gift is a single utterance — 'Salaam' — spoken directly by ar-Rahman Himself to His people. The peak of Paradise is being addressed by God. Ask yourself: I imagine ultimate happiness as an abundance of things. This verse locates it in a relationship — in hearing one word, 'Peace', from the Merciful, face to face. Beneath my pursuit of comforts, is what I'm actually starving for that: not more possessions, but the direct, peace-giving nearness of the One who made me?
