'So which of the favours of your Lord will you two deny?' al-Saadi notes the refrain here follows a warning — and warnings, too, are favours: to be shown the danger clearly, while there is still time to avoid it, is an act of mercy, not menace. Ask yourself: I flinch from hard warnings and prefer soothing words, but a doctor who names the disease early is kinder than one who lets me feel comfortable toward my ruin. Which of His favours will I deny — including the uncomfortable mercy of being warned? The refrain, laid even beside images of punishment, insists that the warning itself is a gift from a Lord who would rather I turn back than be caught.
