'In both of them are two flowing springs.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the springs 'tajriyan' — running, living water, the ancient symbol of life and refreshment, ever-moving and never stagnant. Ask yourself: so much of this world's satisfaction is stagnant — a pleasure that pools, then sours, then must be refilled from outside. This verse pictures reward as *flowing* — a delight that renews itself, never going stale. It hints at what my heart actually thirsts for: not a fixed quantity of pleasure to be used up, but a living source that keeps giving. Am I trying to slake an infinite thirst at stagnant pools — or seeking the flowing springs that only the Merciful can provide?
