Meaning & Reflection

'In Gardens of Bliss.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note 'jannat an-na'im' — Gardens whose defining quality is *na'im*, pure, unmixed bliss: delight with no sorrow woven through it, no fear of loss, no aftertaste of regret. Ask yourself: every joy I know here is mixed — shadowed by the fear it will end, diluted by some ache, followed by a comedown. I have never once tasted delight that was not, somewhere, alloyed with anxiety. This verse names a bliss that is *only* bliss. It stretches my imagination past the only kind of happiness I've experienced toward one I've never had. Recognising that unmixed joy exists — but is kept *there* — do I stop demanding it of a world that can only ever hand me the mixed kind?
