Surah Al-Waaqia 56:16 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

سُورَةُ الوَاقِعَةِ · Meccan · Verse 16 of 96

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ

English: they will sit facing each other;

Bengali: তারা তাতে হেলান দিয়ে বসবে পরস্পর মুখোমুখি হয়ে।

Meaning & Reflection

'Reclining upon them, facing one another.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note 'mutaqabilin' — facing each other: an image of pure companionship, hearts turned toward one another with no back turned, no rivalry, no need to guard oneself. Ask yourself: so many of my relationships here are lived side-by-side but rarely truly face-to-face — distracted, defended, half-present, watching for slights. This verse pictures companionship with nothing between: attention wholly given, faces turned toward each other in perfect ease. It names a longing I carry constantly — to be fully met, without the armour. Recognising that flawless facing-one-another is a feature of Paradise, could I offer even a little more of it now — putting down the phone, the guard, the distraction, and truly facing the people in front of me?

Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Saadi, al-Biqa'i.
