Surah Al-Waaqia 56:40 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

سُورَةُ الوَاقِعَةِ · Meccan · Verse 40 of 96

وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

English: and many from later generations.

Bengali: এবং একদল পরবর্তীদের মধ্য থেকে।

Meaning & Reflection

'And a large company from the later peoples.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note that here — unlike the 'few' of the foremost from later generations — the right-hand class has 'a throng from the later' too. The multitude of the saved remains vast even in the last, distracted ages. Ask yourself: this is pointed hope for someone born late, in a faithless time. The highest rank thins with the centuries, but the right-hand door stays wide open, its company thick in every era including mine. It refuses me the excuse that my age is simply too far gone for salvation. The front rank may be hard now — but the right hand is still crowded with people just like me. Do I let the lateness of my era discourage me from even that reachable hope?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i.
