Meaning & Reflection
Notice the sequence Ibn Ashur draws out: we praise Allah, then declare our servitude and need, and only then ask — 'Guide us to the straight path.' Ibn Kathir calls praising before petitioning the most complete way to ask, the most fit for an answer. And what we are taught to beg for first is not wealth or relief but guidance — and even those already guided, the prophets included, must keep praying for it, because staying on the path is a moment-by-moment gift, not a possession you lock away (Ma'arif al-Qur'an). The 'straight' path, the scholars add, is the one free of both excess and neglect. Ask yourself: I ask Allah for so many things — when did I last urgently ask Him for the one thing this verse puts first, to be kept on the straight path?
