إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةًۭ لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا

English: We have adorned the earth with attractive things so that We may test people to find out which of them do best,

Meaning & Reflection

'Indeed, We have made what is on the earth an adornment for it, to test which of them is best in deed.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the stunning reframe: the beauty of the world — its wealth, pleasures, attractions — is explicitly a *test*, 'li-nabluwahum ayyuhum ahsanu 'amala', a set-up to reveal who acts best. Ask yourself: I experience the world's allurements as simply *good things to obtain*. This verse tells me they are exam questions — placed deliberately to see what I do with them, whether I'm seduced or stay upright. It transforms my whole relationship with the attractive: the beautiful thing is not the prize but the *test wrapped in a prize*. When something glittering pulls at me, do I see the pull itself as the exam — and ask not 'how do I get it?' but 'how do I pass?'
