هُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُهُمْ فِى ظِلَٰلٍ عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ مُتَّكِـُٔونَ

Meaning & Reflection
'They and their spouses, in shade, reclining on couches.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the picture of settled rest: cool shade, trusted companionship, ease — the restlessness of this world finally stilled. Not striving, not bracing for the next blow, simply at rest with the ones they love. Ask yourself: how much of my life is spent upright and tensed — working, guarding, anticipating? This verse holds out an image of a self that is finally allowed to recline, in shade, with those it loves, unafraid. That longing for real rest that never quite arrives here — this verse names where it is actually kept. Am I chasing that rest in places that can only ever offer a tired imitation of it?
Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i.
