Surah Ar-Rahmaan 55:54 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection
Medinan · Verse 54 of 78
English: They will sit on couches upholstered with brocade, the fruit of both gardens within easy reach.
Meaning & Reflection
'Reclining upon couches lined with brocade, the fruit of both Gardens hanging near.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the picture of complete ease: rest ('muttaki'in', reclining), luxury (linings of rich brocade), and effortless provision — the fruit is 'dan', within easy reach, no striving to grasp it. Ask yourself: even the linings — the parts not seen — are described as fine, and the fruit bends close so no effort is needed. This is the opposite of my life of reaching, straining, chasing what stays just out of grasp. The verse names a rest where desire and its fulfilment finally sit side by side. My exhausting pursuit of a comfort that always recedes — is it aimed at the one place where the fruit actually comes to *me*?
Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Saadi, al-Biqa'i.
