Meaning & Reflection

'In both of them are two gushing springs.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the intensifying image — 'naddakhatan', springs that gush and spout abundantly, even more forceful than the 'flowing' springs of the higher Gardens. Ask yourself: the water here does not merely run; it *bursts forth*, overflowing. The whole Surah keeps escalating the picture of generosity, spring after spring, garden after garden, as if to defeat my stingy imagination of what my Lord gives. It refuses to let me picture the reward as modest. When my heart shrinks God's generosity down to something cautious and measured, this gushing spring corrects me: His giving overflows. Do I ask Him as one who expects a trickle, or a torrent?
