لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

Meaning & Reflection

'They hear no idle talk there, nor any sinful speech.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i note the two things absent — 'laghw' (empty, pointless chatter) and 'ta'thim' (speech that wounds or leads to sin): the whole atmosphere of noise, gossip, cruelty, and vanity is simply gone. Ask yourself: so much of the air I breathe is exactly this — pointless noise and low-grade unkindness, in my feeds, my conversations, my own mouth. This verse describes an environment scrubbed clean of both, and names it as part of Paradise's peace. It reveals how heavy the constant static of empty and hurtful speech actually is — I only feel it lift when I imagine its absence. How much of the noise I both consume and produce could I start clearing now, to taste even a little of that quiet?
