بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

'Rather, we are deprived.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the second cry — 'bal nahnu mahrumun': not merely in debt but cut off, denied our very sustenance, the provision withheld. Ask yourself: the two cries together — 'ruined' and 'deprived' — capture the full panic of losing what I depended on to live. The verse lets me hear it so that I will locate my security somewhere it cannot be revoked. It quietly asks: when I imagine losing my livelihood, my provision, is my despair total — as though the crop *were* my life — or do I still know that the Provider remains even when the provision is withheld? The failed harvest is a small rehearsal of a bigger question: is my ultimate reliance on the gift, or on the Giver who can grant it again?
