إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

Meaning & Reflection

'Indeed, this is the certain truth.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the seal set on the whole Surah — 'haqq al-yaqin', the truth of absolute certainty, the highest degree of sureness: everything just described — the Event, the three classes, the deathbed, the destinies — is not conjecture but settled, certain reality. Ask yourself: I file so much of the hereafter under 'possible', 'maybe', 'we can't really know' — a comfortable haze that keeps it from pressing on my choices. This verse dispels the haze: it names all of it *certain truth*, of the surest kind. It confronts my habitual treating of the most important realities as the least certain. If what I've just read is 'haqq al-yaqin' — certainty itself — then the only unreasonable response is to keep living as though it were a distant maybe. Do I hold these truths with the certainty He assigns them?
